Overview
The Nutrition & Health Foundation (NHF) aims to provide consumers with evidence-based information on nutrition and physical activity, to enable them to make informed lifestyle choices. We are currently running three key initiatives to promote a healthier Ireland:
(1) Research
The NHF regulary undertakes or provide funding for consumer attitudes and motivations towards health, diet, exercise and lifestyle. This research is primarily conducted to provide greater insight into consumer atttitudes and develop better methods for encouraging, maintaining, restoring or achieving a greater quality of health in the population through improved diet, physical activity and lifestyle. The research results provide the basis for NHF initiatives and projects.
Some of the projects that the NHF have undertaken or funded to date:
Health and Lifestyle Research, 2005
Motivational Aspects of Behavioural Change Research, 2007
National Teens Survey, 2008
(conducted by the Irish Universities Nutrition Alliance)
Lifestyle Behaviour Change for General Practice, Ongoing at present (conducted by the Irish College of General Practitioners)
(2) Workplace Wellbeing Campaign
A workplace that supports healthy lifestyles offers an enormous benefit to its employees. Given the length of time that people spend in the workplace, it is recognised as an appropriate setting for health promotion. Addressing diet and physical inactivity in this setting can serve to improve the health status of workers. (
Preventing Non-communicable Diseases in the Workplace through Diet and Physical Activity’
World Health Organisation and the World Economic Forum
, 2008).
The
Workplace Wellbeing Campaign
offers an easy and convenient way for employers to help their workers in this regard.
(3) Eat Smart Week
The NHF's Eat Smart Week is an awareness raising initiative. The aim is to highlight that healthy eating is possible to achieve in this time deficient era. Small changes can make all the difference to your diet, health and wellbeing.
